Economics indubitably is an established discipline with rich history of methods and outcomes. Yet as we plunge headlong into the digital era, it is fraught with new challenges that test the orthodoxy to its limits. With passage of time, economics has sort of invaded into every other discipline thus becoming a foundational bedrock for many a theory, concept and model. The digital domain too is without exception with economics bringing its analytical tools and methods to understand the changing contours of the business polity and society.
From an academic perspective, economics is an independent discipline having a time-honoured network. Yet in the milieu of B-Schools, economics is often seen as sort of subsidiary or supporting discipline than a bread and butter. Therefore, as B-Schools venture into creating a network for economics and by extension economics research, through an organization of conferences or seminars or similar platforms, it is bound to present itself with a unique set of challenging propositions. Yet, given the relative non-involvement of B-School milieu in Economics conference circuit (barring exceptions), it presents to us an opportunity. In parallel, there is no doubt that business is a function of changes in public policy. There is considerable interwining between economics and public policy. Thus a discussion in economics without reference to public policy might remain incomplete. Therefore, all the need to have an Economics and Public Policy Conference.
The audience for any event might not necessarily be homogenous. Therefore, as management theories suggest, they need to be targeted differently. Hence, the current event follows two parallel categories. There is an audience, a younger one aspirational to adopt economics as a career, the future economists and the second the established, the ones in the profession academics or otherwise. To the latter, the publication matters while for the former, it is the recognition that matters.
