‘I’ Brand – Building an Individual Brand
Speaker: Mr. Saurabh Verma, Executive Vice President, Willis Towers Watson, Delhi, India
Date: August 29, 2020
On 29th August 2020, the students of batch 2020 – 22 had an opportunity to learn to build an Individual brand through a guest lecture delivered by Mr. Saurabh Verma. The session started with a discussion on investment, addressing how self-investment is the best investment, and how one can portray themself as a brand in the corporate world.
The first focus on building an ‘I’ brand is to have a strong foundation in the basics of business. It can be anything from analysing a company balance sheet, to having a strong knowledge about the company’s products. Knowing the business terminologies is also included in this. Secondly, it is important to know one’s brand reflection. There is a difference in what we are and what others perceive us to be. The way others see or think about us is our Brand reflection. Small things like how we communicate or our choice of words, impact our brand reflection. To have a positive impact, one should not be afraid to go the extra mile.
We should remember that learning is a continuous process, and keep learning even after getting a job because more learning happens while working. Pro-actively learning and updating oneself with the latest technological trends is always a better personal branding. To be known as a person having content, we can always start with writing blogs or posting thoughts about different things on LinkedIn. Students’ intent should be to learn and not to write the best or perfect post. We may make mistakes initially, but learning from them, and understanding more on the subject is a positive step for brand-building.
Mr. Saurabh ensured that the session was more interactive and the points on building a self-brand, were explained on a Q & A basis. Students were much enthusiastic about the topic and posted their views and doubts on individual branding. Sir tried to answer all the questions and also relate it to self-branding as much as possible.
Students were given a realistic picture of how to start initially and the key areas of focus. There were many examples quoted to keep the concepts practical and relatable. One such advice was to invest a small amount in stocks with personal savings to better know and understand how markets are run.
As put by many students, it was a very interactive session making students realize how to start their planning and preparation for their end goal or dream job.
