Go Green Initiative 2019
Go Green Initiative
On March 24th, 2019 Hope Committee joined hands with Equals Green and took initiative to clean a public lake in JP Nagar, Bengaluru. Hope Committee’s team consisted of 8 core members and 21 volunteers from the junior batch along with the committee’s mentor Ms. Bhavya Kalra. Reaching the spot, we met Mr. Mrintunjay Kumar from Equals Green, who coordinated the whole program. The students were instructed to collect, all the garbage on the lakeside and collect it at the spot, which would further be taken away by BMC. While cleaning the lake we found a lot of stuff, that shouldn’t belong in the lake. It was surprising that the whole walking trail surrounding the lake had been used by people as a dumping ground for quite some time now. The whole lake had dried up due to all these dumping activities. Under the guidance of Mritunjay sir and Bhavya Ma’am, all the volunteers cleaned up all the plastic, bottles and other garbage from the lake. After finishing everyone took some refreshments and Mrintunjay sir told them about his NGO Equals Green. His NGO Equals Green calculates the damage done by carbon emission from individual/ families/ firms, and then they plant the same amount of trees required to compensate it. In return for the amount that is paid by these individuals, Equals Green gives them a certificate saying that the individual/ household/firm is pollution-free or is not causing any damage to the environment. They create forever forest on lands using the Japanese Miyawaki method. This method is a self-sustaining way of growing trees. Throughout the program, we learned a lot, and it felt great to be part of such a noble initiative towards the environment.
