Guest Lecture – Finance and Financial Instruments

Ms. Suruchi Mahajan is a Chartered Accountant and serves as Visiting Faculty for Finance & Accounts subjects in various institutions of repute. In a career spanning 12 years, she has served in some reputed organizations like IDBI Bank and Infosys with expertise in areas like Corporate Finance, Revenue Assurance, Taxation, Portfolio Management, Auditing, Bank Operations etc. She interacted with IBA Students about Finance and Financial Instruments for Management students.
Ms. Suruchi opened her talk by introducing herself and about the field of Finance to the students. Her topic of discussion was the Fundamentals of Finance related to Business and Financial instruments used in the market. Ms. Suruchi also stressed that Finance is not as difficult as the students think if they make it a point to learn the basics in simple language rather than trying to by heart them.
Ms. Suruchi then went on to cover topics like the types of Capital, types of Investors in the market, Risk, types of Shares, Debt & Equity, Financial statements and IPOs. The exciting part of the session was the simple examples which Ms. Suruchi took to explain the concepts which included the journey of Facebook & Flipkart.
Ms. Suruchi also detailed various Financial instruments in the market like Bonds, Shares, Derivatives, Mutual funds, Securities, T-bills etc. which investors utilize to invest in the market depending on their risk appetite as every instrument has a different level of risk associated with it.
She concluded her session by giving some tips for investing in the market for beginners and also suggested that students should strive to improve awareness about the business scenario in addition to their subject knowledge as knowledge of this kind helps in creating a good impression about their personality.
