Guru Nanak Jayanti
Date- 19.11.2021
The auspicious occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti is one of Sikhism’s most significant feasts. Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first of the ten Sikh gurus, was born on this day. Guru Nanak Dev Ji, according to Sikhs, delivered enlightenment to the world.
Guru Nanak Jayanti 2021 was held on Friday, November 19th, to commemorate Guru Nanak’s 552nd birth anniversary. Guru Nanak Jayanti 2020 will be held on Monday, November 30th, to commemorate Guru Nanak’s 551st birth anniversary.
Gurudwaras begin their celebrations two days before Guru Nanak Jayanti. The Akhand Path is a 48-hour continuous recitation of the Guru Granth Sahib. A Nagarkirtan procession is held the day before Guru Nanak’s birthday. The Panj Pyare, a group of five men carrying the Sikh triangle flag Nishan Sahib, lead the parade.During the procession, the holy Guru Grant Sahib is carried on a palanquin. People perform martial arts demonstrations while singing hymns in groups and using traditional musical instruments. The joyous procession marches through streets festooned with flowers and banners.
Langar is a Persian word that means “an almshouse” or “a place for the destitute and needy.” That is the name given to a community kitchen in Sikh tradition. The idea of Langar is to feed everyone in need, regardless of caste, class, religion, or gender, and to always welcome them as the Guru’s guests.
Guru Nanak is supposed to have been given money and told by his father to go to the market to practise ‘Sacha Sauda’ when he was a child (a good bargain). Nanak’s father was a well-known trader in his area, and when he was just 12 years old, he wanted him to learn the family business. Instead of engaging in a worldly transaction, the Guru used the money to purchase food for a large number of saints who had been starving for days. That, he claimed, was the “real business.” On Guru Nanak Jayanti, at IBA, the processions and celebrations are followed by serving special food with Lassi. Few of the students’ volunteer to serve the food.
Guru Nanak Dev instilled in humanity the values of love, peace, and harmony. He desired that no one be discriminated against for any reason, and that people live in peace. He was merely the pioneer of the community kitchen, where people of all faiths, affluent and poor, eat together. He did it to promote a sense of community and equality among the people. IBA serves the same purpose.
