Guru Nanak Jayanti
Guru Nanak Jayanti
Guru Nanak Jayanti is one of the most important and sacred festivals celebrated by the people of the Sikh community worldwide. It is generally celebrated November. All the festivals of Sikh community mainly revolve around the 10 Sikh gurus who were responsible for almost all the beliefs of Sikhism. Guru Nanak Jayanti also known as Guru Nanak Gurpurab, is celebrated on the occasion of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s birth anniversary. On this day Sikhs go to Gurudwara (place of worship for sikhs), and they chant hymns and pray to the gurus, thanking them for the legacy that had been passed on. This is followed by “Langar” which is a community kitchen at the gurudwaras, where free food is distributed for all the people who visit, without any distinction of caste, religion, place, gender and economic status.
In IBA the preparation for the Gurunanak Jayanthi started two days before the actual date of the festival. On the auspicious day of the festival we started from IBA to the Gurudwara located near MG Road in Bangalore, at 5 AM in 2 buses arranged by the college cultural committee, YMCC. Students had reached the place by 6:30 AM. The Gurudwara was a very beautiful and pleasant place, emitting positive vibes and sounds of Hymns. Everyone entered the Gurudwara removing their footwear, washing their feet & hands and covering their heads with a cloth. The ambience of the Gurudwara’s Sanctum was pacifying where the preachings of Shri Guru Nanak Ji were being recited. The students also went and prayed to the gurus and then listened to the pleasant hymns for a while. Then they proceeded to the Langar, where students made pooris for the visitors. The kitchen was huge, where a lot of people were doing different works which they termed “Seva.” Some were supplying food for the visitors, and some were cooking food, everyone contributed in one or the other work.
In the end, students also had some food which consisted of Jalebi, Pakora and tea. After this, the students came out and clicked some pictures and then returned to the college by 9:30 AM.
