Maha Shivaratri 2020
MAHA-SHIVRATRI
Date: 21st February 2020
Maha Shivartri is considered as one of the important festivals celebrated around 400 temples in India and Nepal. The festival is celebrated on the new moon day in the month of Maagha in the Hindu calendar as the day to venerate Lord Shiva, one of the Holy Trinity in Hindu culture. According to a legend, it marks the sacred union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi. According to another legend, in the Shaivism tradition, this is the night when Shiva performs the heavenly dance of creation, preservation, and destruction. It is also believed that on this day, Lord Shiva saved both the gods and mankind by consuming the poison which came out during Samudra Manthan, when Gods and Demons churned for Ambrosia, which laid in ocean depth. It is believed that the formless God Sadashiv appears in the form of a Lingodbhav Moorti at midnight. Hence people stay awake all night, offering prayers to god. People celebrate Maha-Shivaratri with great enthusiasm and offer prayers to Lord Shiva, expecting to have the concern of God and let their lives filled with happiness, wealth, and health.
As per the tradition of IBA, every culture and tradition is given due respect and celebrated with equal fervour. Maha-Shivaratri also was celebrated at IBA with great enthusiasm from the students, staff, and faculty. It was a delightful feeling to experience the Shiva chants and the process of celebrating the festival. Many students at IBA had been fasting for the entire day. Pooja started at 11:45 PM in the night and ended at around 2:00 AM. The fasting students ended their fast after seeking the blessings of God and having dinner at Santripti after the Pooja.
