Makar Sankranti/Sankranti, the harvest festival, is a seasonal celebration in honour of Lord Surya. This auspicious festival is a seasonal celebration in honour of Lord Surya. It acknowledges the sun’s arrival in Makara rashi, i.e., the Capricorn zodiac sign. Makar Sankranti is celebrated to mark the end of the winter season while welcoming longer days due to the northward movement of the sun. This year, the festival is on Saturday, January 15, 2022.
Makar Sankranti is celebrated with great joy all over the country. It is considered as a day which brings prosperity, peace and happiness. Devotees bathe in the water of sacred rivers such as the Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri. They believe that, by doing so, they clear them of their sins. Worshippers also ensure to express their gratitude and pay tribute to the Sun God by performing several spiritual acts. Sweets made from sesame and jaggery such as laddoos and chikkis are shared amongst people. This symbolises a desire for unity, peace and harmony. People celebrate Makar Sankranti by wearing ethnic wear clothes and will do pooja to Goddess Laxmi, Saraswathi and Ganesha by offering flowers and some homemade sweets in their home. Indus Business Academy(IBA) which is also known as INDIAPURA and MINI-INDIA, is a home for people from different parts of India. IBA follows the culture and tradition of celebrating every festival, where students celebrate and show active participation. As a part, Makar Sankranti was celebrated on 15th January 2022.
