Workshop On
My Fifty years in Marketing
By Dr. Madhav Kacker
21st March 2014
Time: 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM
Venue: Indus Business Academy, Bangalore
Introduction
In this informal interaction Dr. Madhav narrated his own story unfolding a long academic career that began in 1952 as a lecturer in Commerce at Banaras Hindu University. How he gradually developed interest in Marketing and chose Textile Marketing as the topic of his Ph. D work. This journey took a remarkable turn when he moved to Michigan State to work for a Doctorate degree in Business Administration in 1964. From Michigan State back to India he joined Administrative Staff College, Hyderabad and from there moved to B. K. School of Business Management, Ahmedabad. In the meantime he was selected for a prestigious Fulbright Fellowship which made a dramatic impact on his career. As a research fellow he was assigned to Baruch College, City University of New York where he launched a study of transatlantic flow of retailing knowhow. The research led to a series of publications, a research grant from The Conference Board, a study for the U.N. Center of Transnational Corporations, a number of Conference presentations and short-term appointments at the Center of Retail Studies, University of Stirling, U.K. and Monash University, Melbourne, Australia.
He has thus seen a real metamorphosis of Marketing education in India and the U.S. He has now been retired for over ten years but not really. As a volunteer executive council member of AARP Massachusetts for the past six years he has been now involved more in solving the problems faced by retired older community: protecting their entitlements, social security and Medicare, ensuring quality affordable healthcare, their transportation and housing needs and more importantly dealing with legislators to get things done within budgetary constraints. This is a new phase in his professional life which he is willing to share gladly with participants of the Workshop.
